Cebu is the Philippines' most convenient island escape: an international airport on Mactan Island, a strip of beachfront resorts fifteen minutes from the terminal, and a province that packs whale sharks, waterfalls, sardine runs and island-hopping into a couple of hours' drive. Mactan's resorts line the island's east coast, each with its own beach, house reef and dive centre — big family properties with waterparks and kids' clubs, and quieter, more boutique stays at the southern end. Cebu City, across the bridges, is the Philippines' oldest city, with Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño and a lively lechon and seafood scene.
The province is the adventure: swim with whale sharks at Oslob, canyoneer the turquoise pools of Kawasan Falls, snorkel Moalboal's sardine run from the shore, hop by boat to the sandbars and reefs of the Olango islands, or take the fast ferry to Bohol for the Chocolate Hills and the beaches of Panglao. December to May is the dry season, with March to May the hottest and calmest for the water; June to November is wetter, though Cebu is more sheltered from typhoons than the north. How do I get to Cebu?
Jetstar flies direct to Cebu's Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific connect via Manila. The Mactan resorts are 15–30 minutes from the airport — among the shortest airport-to-beach transfers in Asia. Australians can enter visa-free for up to 30 days.
When is the best time to visit Cebu?
December to May is the dry season — December to February is pleasantly warm, March to May hot and calm with the clearest water. June to November is the wet season with heavier showers, though Cebu is somewhat sheltered from the typhoon belt. Whale sharks at Oslob are present year-round.
Are Mactan's beaches good?
They're resort beaches — sheltered, with house reefs for snorkelling, but generally smaller and rockier than Boracay or Palawan, and the resorts add large pools and beach clubs to compensate. The real beach scenery is a boat trip away at the Olango islands, Bantayan and Malapascua.
Is Cebu good for families?
Very. Mactan's big resorts have waterparks, kids' clubs and calm lagoons, the whale sharks, Kawasan Falls and island-hopping are genuine adventures for older kids, and the short airport transfer helps with young children. English is spoken everywhere.
