Phuket Old Town is the island's best-kept secret hiding in plain sight: a grid of pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Chinese shrines and tin-baron mansions in Phuket City, twenty minutes and a world away from the beaches. It's where Phuket's fortune was made in the tin-mining boom, and the architecture — arched colonnades, louvred shutters and stucco flourishes on Thalang, Dibuk and Soi Romanee — has been lovingly restored into cafés, galleries and small hotels.
Staying here is a different kind of Phuket. Boutique hotels occupy century-old shophouses with courtyard pools and rooftop bars, breakfast is a bowl of Hokkien noodles or dim sum at a heritage coffee shop, and evenings are spent on the Sunday Walking Street market along Thalang Road, or at one of the Old Town's celebrated Peranakan restaurants. The Baba culture — a blend of Chinese and Malay — gives the food, the festivals and the street life a flavour found nowhere else in Thailand.
It's also a superb base. Rang Hill's viewpoint and the Big Buddha are minutes away, Chalong Pier launches boat trips to Phi Phi, Racha and Coral Island, and the beaches of Kata, Karon and Patong are an easy 25-minute ride when you want sand. Many travellers split a Phuket week between the Old Town and a beach resort, getting culture and coast in one trip.
November to April is the dry season and the Old Town's festival season too — the Phuket Vegetarian Festival in October and Chinese New Year in January or February fill the streets with lanterns and processions. May to October is quieter and greener, with lower rates and the shophouses looking their best under dramatic monsoon skies. Phuket Old Town is the historic centre of Phuket City on the island's south-east side, about 35 minutes from Phuket International Airport by car and 20–25 minutes from the west-coast beaches. Australians fly to Phuket via Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, and most of our deals will include a private airport transfer.
Is Phuket Old Town worth staying in rather than the beach?
Yes, if character and food matter to you. The Old Town has Phuket's best-preserved architecture, its most interesting dining, walkable streets and boutique hotels with real personality — and no beach. Many travellers do two or three nights in the Old Town and the rest of the week at a beach resort, which gives the best of both.
What is there to do in Phuket Old Town?
Walk Thalang Road and Soi Romanee for shophouses and street art, visit the Thai Hua Museum and the Chinpracha House mansion, eat Hokkien mee and Peranakan dishes at the heritage restaurants, climb Rang Hill for the sunset, and time your visit for the Sunday Walking Street market. Boat trips to Phi Phi and Coral Island leave from nearby Chalong and Rassada piers.
When is the best time to visit Phuket Old Town?
November to April is the dry season, with cooler evenings ideal for walking the streets. Chinese New Year and the Phuket Vegetarian Festival (usually October) are spectacular in the Old Town. May to October is the green season: fewer visitors, softer rates and short afternoon showers.
Is Phuket Old Town good for families?
It works well for a few nights — kids enjoy the colourful streets, the Sunday market, the museums and Rang Hill's monkeys — but there's no beach or big resort pool, so most families pair it with a stay at Kata, Karon or the northern beaches.
