Myeongdong and Jongno, north of the river, put you beside the palaces, Bukchon's hanok village, Insadong's tea houses and the busiest shopping streets; Gangnam is the sleek, upmarket south with big-brand hotels and the COEX mall; Hongdae is the student-and-nightlife quarter; and Itaewon and Hannam are the international dining districts. The subway connects everything in minutes.
A Seoul itinerary writes itself: Gyeongbokgung Palace and the changing of the guard, hanbok dress-up in Bukchon, Gwangjang Market's street food, a sunset from N Seoul Tower, a Han River picnic, Dongdaemun's midnight shopping, a jjimjilbang spa, and a day trip to the DMZ or the Nami Island of K-drama fame. Autumn foliage in Bukhansan National Park is a highlight for hikers.

How do I get to Seoul from Australia?
Jetstar flies direct from Sydney and Brisbane to Seoul Incheon, with Korean Air, Asiana and Qantas also on the route — around ten to eleven hours, usually overnight. The AREX express train reaches Seoul Station in 45 minutes, and limousine buses serve the main hotel districts. Australians need a K-ETA, arranged online before departure.
Where should I stay in Seoul?
Myeongdong or Jongno for palaces, shopping and a central base; Gangnam for upmarket hotels and the modern city; Hongdae for nightlife and a younger vibe; Itaewon for international dining. First-timers usually do best north of the river in Myeongdong or Jongno.
When is the best time to visit Seoul?
April for cherry blossom and October to early November for autumn colour — both peak, so book early. May, June and September are quieter with good weather. Summer (July–August) is hot, humid and wet; winter (December–February) is cold and dry, with the fewest tourists and Christmas lights.
How many nights do I need in Seoul?
Four nights covers the palaces, the markets, the neighbourhoods and a day trip. Five or six lets you add the DMZ, Nami Island or a temple stay. Seoul pairs well with two nights in Busan by high-speed train (2.5 hours) or Jeju by a one-hour flight.
Is Seoul good for families?
Yes — safe, clean and easy to navigate, with Lotte World, the Trick Eye and Alive museums, hanbok dress-up at the palaces, the Han River parks and cable cars, and kid-friendly food (fried chicken, bulgogi, bingsu). Family rooms are common in the larger hotels.
